Basement Tapes Vol. 1

by Delay

about

We have a new album on the way! "Circle Change" is due out this Summer on Salinas Records. To help pay it off and get set for two months of touring, we offer you this limited release for $5 and up. Your donation would greatly help us continue to do what we love and hopefully give you something special in return from us. Thanks for any and all of your support. It will be up today and tomorrow only!!!

This seven song tape (uploaded as 1 track) is a rare relic from the Delay vaults. I can't see more than a handful existing. It happened in January of 1999 and marks our very first time as a trio in a proper recording studio. By that I mean that Jesse's (drums) dad knew a guy on his UPS route that had a little set up in his basement, maybe in Medina, OH. He had some mics and stands, enough headphones for each of us and a little board. I wish I knew exactly what we recorded on. Reel to reel tape? Some ancient digital audio workstation? For us, it was awkward to play at different times and more difficult to play at the right time. We were used to playing all at once, facing each other in a sort of circle, collecting energy and cues by looking at each other. We had recorded before but straight to a boombox or one mic connected to my dad's Tascam that we had no idea how to use.

This tape had one main goal: Show Roehm Middle School that Delay is a punk rock band and they are cool; befriend or date them, now! The first thing anyone at school said to me about the tape was, "You sound like Simba." The cub from The Lion King and I shared a clean and young sound, exhibiting our pre-mane biology via song. This tape came to be shortly after we learned to tune; shortly after Jesse learned to do multiple things at once on a drum set. Austin was always a bass master. The power chord had just dawned on me. Lyrical drama about love, life and death was present even then. Tré cool.
